Ch19 Test

Read 21-1 and take Two-Column Notes to be used during knowledge check tomorrow. Knowledge Check is intended to be largely factual and not contain full understanding of difficult concepts. For instance, expect this one to contain vocab and lists of factors that affect the rate of dissolving but nothing in-depth about the details of the dissolving process.

2/1

Th

Ch19 NBC

Ch21-1 KC

Ch21-1 LN (Dissolving Process) with Phet (here) as follows

Read p649 1st four paragraphs and watch the animation on Phet. Then, draw three diagrams with no more than 10 words per diagram. This must be in your own words, not copied from text.

Each diagram must contain

- Solute and Solvent Clearly Labeled

- Each H2O must have a + and – labeled (mickey mouse shape)

- Each sugar must also have a + and – (big blob shape)

21-3 LN Part A Ionization and Dissociation using Phet (here)

Ionization: Read p658. Explain how H3O+ is formed and why. Draw a picture that goes with your explanation.

Dissociation of Salt:

Read p659 and watch animation (Linked here)

As you did with sugar, make three pictures showing three steps (it is not done this way in the book so THINK). Put a sentence explanation for each.
You must draw +/- on both the water molecules and ions to show how the attraction occurs.

Draw a Venn diagram to compare / contrast dissociation, ionization, and dissolving. Which starts with ionic compounds and which starts with covalent bonds? Which relies on water polarity? Which breaks bonds? Which produces ions? Which produces H3O+? Summarize the answers to these questions in your in Venn D.
